My addiction to RC aircraft is real.</p><p>In the past two days I have made two major purchases. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-mpzFWtz3EgA/Yajx5OrYjjI/AAAAAAABGJs/9mknhIDj3mIf7OgBfHHpmPSQPMnxZdTZACNcBGAsYHQ/s800/HAN2345_A0_D4O7TW17.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="800" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-mpzFWtz3EgA/Yajx5OrYjjI/AAAAAAABGJs/9mknhIDj3mIf7OgBfHHpmPSQPMnxZdTZACNcBGAsYHQ/w400-h400/HAN2345_A0_D4O7TW17.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Being an idiot, I am buying my 3rd <a href="https://www.towerhobbies.com/product/ultra-stick-10cc-arf-60/HAN2345.html?gclid=Cj0KCQiA-qGNBhD3ARIsAO_o7yk_EOf6YRwYwtHJavkdCAjJSQEyXMzfm-EPyIZ5XZlvnkkhdIDgtt4aAkxkEALw_wcB" target="_blank">Hangar 9 10cc Ultrastick</a> withing the last year, having <a href="https://pretorian435.blogspot.com/2021/10/kinda-tired-of-all-crashing.html?m=0" target="_blank">the last one take too long to come out of a hammerhead</a>. This time I will figure out how to fit the elevator and rudder servo's near the CG as opposed to aft, and put a smaller tail wheel on it. Dare I use the stock? Hmmmm... not sure. I am pretty sure I will spend more money I don't have putting bigger wheels on it, partly to make it more amenable to our field, but also because I like big wheels and I cannot lie.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GL6712fPmnY/Yajx7EXjT-I/AAAAAAABGJw/EUdzC2f7tLY1iVdH9ddwiOXvdYvpy-HSgCNcBGAsYHQ/s569/SEA50-ULTIMATE-BIPLANE-angle.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="412" data-original-width="569" height="290" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GL6712fPmnY/Yajx7EXjT-I/AAAAAAABGJw/EUdzC2f7tLY1iVdH9ddwiOXvdYvpy-HSgCNcBGAsYHQ/w400-h290/SEA50-ULTIMATE-BIPLANE-angle.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I pulled the trigger on the <a href="https://www.legendhobby.com/product/seagull-models-ultimate-biplane-90-120-arf-sea50/" target="_blank">Seagull Ultimate from Legend Hobby</a>. I love the Ultimate. I cried when I had a midair with my balsa Eflite Ultimate, one of the best airplanes I ever had, which they degraded to a foamie so I won't get it again. I chronicled the <a href="https://pretorian435.blogspot.com/2021/10/not-my-fault-but-my-fault.html?m=0" target="_blank">demise of my lovely Pitts Model 12</a>, and pouted that I hate flying and will never build another plane. So yeah, addicted, because I made these two purchases I probably shouldn't be making. I totally felt like a kid stealing cake from the kitchen... I'll get over the guilt, and I will still have cake.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Livf3Z0lmXk/Yaj0XjdXWvI/AAAAAAABGKE/7vQiCe_AkiQHoSxXmat4j3QGQ2VH28vfgCPcBGAsYHg/s4160/KIMG1116.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4160" data-original-width="2340" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Livf3Z0lmXk/Yaj0XjdXWvI/AAAAAAABGKE/7vQiCe_AkiQHoSxXmat4j3QGQ2VH28vfgCPcBGAsYHg/w225-h400/KIMG1116.JPG" width="225" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I guess this weekend I will finally get around to salvaging parts from the pile on my "death bench", from the dead Ultrastick and Pitts. This one isn't my fault, but is my fault.</p><p>Lost my new 20cc Pitts Model 12 to a build failure back, on 10/7/21. At least it wasn't pilot error. Still hurts. Took off, had a blast flying the pattern for about 10 minutes with a couple of landing-turn-around-takeoffs, then flew 10 minutes of intense aerobatics. Finally turned downwind, coming down nicely, slowing turn to base leg, and she kept descending, applied more and more up elevator without a response, wings wiggled when asked, 3 F-bombs later she hit the ground. I had no elevator control. Hit the ground with quite a thump in a smooth continous descent.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qm5s4iuQQGE/YWtt1WjuugI/AAAAAAABFsM/Er9v0xL6O40lhYOyiZ2XTPW3dM5IMzwmgCPcBGAsYHg/s4160/KIMG0949.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2340" data-original-width="4160" height="225" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qm5s4iuQQGE/YWtt1WjuugI/AAAAAAABFsM/Er9v0xL6O40lhYOyiZ2XTPW3dM5IMzwmgCPcBGAsYHg/w400-h225/KIMG0949.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-W5Gs1kbh1co/YWtt1bgx5AI/AAAAAAABFsM/9j0UeCYk-0cMb-iVu8R6f7IX6FElUGm4wCPcBGAsYHg/s4160/KIMG0948.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2340" data-original-width="4160" height="225" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-W5Gs1kbh1co/YWtt1bgx5AI/AAAAAAABFsM/9j0UeCYk-0cMb-iVu8R6f7IX6FElUGm4wCPcBGAsYHg/w400-h225/KIMG0948.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Beautiful fun plane, my RCGF-USA 20cc Nitroplanes Pitts Model 12.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Wish I had another one.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-I5vJ_x3Zc1M/YWtrXr9QGyI/AAAAAAABFr8/EctInNltRAkf7ixBtb8L2t9nrQ_PR1BdgCPcBGAsYHg/s4160/KIMG1047.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2340" data-original-width="4160" height="225" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-I5vJ_x3Zc1M/YWtrXr9QGyI/AAAAAAABFr8/EctInNltRAkf7ixBtb8L2t9nrQ_PR1BdgCPcBGAsYHg/w400-h225/KIMG1047.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Can you see the crash site, about a quarter mile out? </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">That's a wet ditch without a bridge...</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FlSW1RTIJh4/YWtrXjA3ceI/AAAAAAABFr8/S__6WtUfKpw32ejJjwZWsFHmmRnteoIGQCPcBGAsYHg/s4160/KIMG1048.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2340" data-original-width="4160" height="225" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FlSW1RTIJh4/YWtrXjA3ceI/AAAAAAABFr8/S__6WtUfKpw32ejJjwZWsFHmmRnteoIGQCPcBGAsYHg/w400-h225/KIMG1048.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Can you see it now?</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lqKji0Xkq90/YWtrXt6Z1tI/AAAAAAABFr8/y_rB1GeEL9UNLUGDuo8WtLoj59vZtckwgCPcBGAsYHg/s4160/KIMG1049.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2340" data-original-width="4160" height="225" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lqKji0Xkq90/YWtrXt6Z1tI/AAAAAAABFr8/y_rB1GeEL9UNLUGDuo8WtLoj59vZtckwgCPcBGAsYHg/w400-h225/KIMG1049.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">How about now? Luis, and Greg were there flying their glorious 700 sized helis on the gasser side, and Dan was enjoying his electric Twisted Hobbies Crack Edge on the electric side. Perfect conditions.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KVBqaWURp_0/YVD-fCID0uI/AAAAAAABFW0/wrbDDJbH5CMseQXprlMwL6arHwrG91fbACPcBGAsYHg/s4128/20210925_151749.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2322" data-original-width="4128" height="225" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KVBqaWURp_0/YVD-fCID0uI/AAAAAAABFW0/wrbDDJbH5CMseQXprlMwL6arHwrG91fbACPcBGAsYHg/w400-h225/20210925_151749.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Preflighted the HK Trex 500 FBL Pro, flying her 5S. I have already rebuilt her, but need a new main shaft, just a hair bent but set up a vibration that made it clear it needs to be replaced. I am out of them, so no flying until I get some in. Twisted a washout arm just a smidge, so replaced that too, and lost the swash-to-head control arms and had to replace those. Replaced the main gear as I failed to hit HOLD and stripped it in a spot. Tail boom replaced, and will replace the main blades. The tail feathers were fine, but I am replacing them with a pair of Align blades. Right now I am just waiting for the main shaft. Oh, the skids were toast. I don't have any, will need to order some, but I had been toying with putting the wheel mod back on with a different idea for the tail wheel. Its done, pics will follow. The canopy was crushed as well, so back to the original blue one. I just could never get the needles right. After a few tweaks on the bench trying to recover it, I grounded it. I will need to replace the carb with a Walbro I will order from Joe at RCGF-USA before I fly it. I won't likely be buying another 10cc engine, they are just too touchy. The Evo on the Ultra Stick used to be but this year it has run perfectly. </div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Well, the heli crash resets the aircraft mishap clock...</div><p></p>Ken Schroeterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11792686126519801598noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2973001257469712096.post-87166374404723527132021-09-21T18:41:00.007-05:002021-09-21T19:47:08.155-05:00Another Awesome Day!<p>Though I maidened the Nitroplanes Pitts Model 12 last week, the engine wasn't running well and I ended up tearing the right landing gear off. I replaced the sparky, many now the engine is running fantastically with the CM6 spark plug. I also brought the AS3X settings closer to final and managed to fine tune it today. A couple of flights in variable gusts really benefitted from the stabilization, but I didn't want to push my luck, so after a couple of flights I put it away. Really enjoyed flying it, and the landing gear held! It did shake the exhaust loose again, despite JB Weld. I went back to traditional, gasket (trying dry) and blue locktite, with lock washers. Hope this works.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Z6xcBlkQUW4/YUpqIgiJe4I/AAAAAAABFTM/2GuOseh_ToYlBxpq66WIPeANURqAAKTPwCPcBGAsYHg/s4160/KIMG1014.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2340" data-original-width="4160" height="225" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Z6xcBlkQUW4/YUpqIgiJe4I/AAAAAAABFTM/2GuOseh_ToYlBxpq66WIPeANURqAAKTPwCPcBGAsYHg/w400-h225/KIMG1014.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XKROdU-TzEk/YUpqIgLS3tI/AAAAAAABFTM/7SDDYDOrdlcZQtNveIDkTR5nzqYlijcTgCPcBGAsYHg/s4160/KIMG1013.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2340" data-original-width="4160" height="225" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XKROdU-TzEk/YUpqIgLS3tI/AAAAAAABFTM/7SDDYDOrdlcZQtNveIDkTR5nzqYlijcTgCPcBGAsYHg/w400-h225/KIMG1013.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div>

Yesterday I took it up and it flew well, but the engine kept detonating. This problem was seen before with the PulseXT 60 with its RCGF-USA 20cc, and it was a bad sparky. It was detonating so bad it shook off the muffler despite JB Weld! I replaced the sparky on the Pitts this morning and it also fixed it. It has more power and runs smoothly. In yesterday's flight I was able to dial in the AS3X gains, and today expect a great day of flying!</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Bpge08p9bpQ/YUnwxz4hP-I/AAAAAAABFRY/WUXpnrxAlAU227GT8OW1MLWol8aH8oz5gCPcBGAsYHg/s2340/KIMG1009.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2340" data-original-width="1593" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Bpge08p9bpQ/YUnwxz4hP-I/AAAAAAABFRY/WUXpnrxAlAU227GT8OW1MLWol8aH8oz5gCPcBGAsYHg/w273-h400/KIMG1009.JPG" width="273" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I don't like these stock M4F's. Last time this started intermittently, and progressed to not turning on at all, and I sent it to Horizon Hobby. After waiting a month to get it back, they found nothing wrong with it... Neither did I, for about a week. The Tx will turn on the orange light steady for a few seconds, then blink 3 times and go out. Doesn't matter if I hold the on switch. Sometimes it boots the first try, usually not, and intermittently on the second try. Today it turned on the light and it stayed on, but nothing happened, and I pulled the battery after 5 min of black screen. She is flying heavy, at about 10 lbs. At the field I noticed that the battery pack puffed during charging. Since I wasn't going to get the wing on with it puffed, I decided to poke a hole in the outer casing to see what would happen. A puff of gray smoke, and the case deflated. Nothing else happened. Battery worked fine. I decided to fly, since the draw would be minimal, and it worked fine. I decided to replace it anyway, no matter what the IRs are. This is a new battery and it should not have puffed under 1C charging. I need to shed some weight, so I have already bought a replacement 2S 2200 mAh LiPO. I don't understand why its so heavy. Firm crosswind gusts, so I practiced takeoff and landings. First several flights I fought to get my Mojo back, hands shaking, having trouble breathing, sweating, anxiety pounding my heart with a sledgehammer, freaking out worse when the ground came up and over correcting. PTSD, literally, from having a run of bad luck and unskilled flying these past few weeks. After about the 3rd 15 min flight I was calm and finally feeling like I was ahead of the aircraft most of the time. There was some gusts that made it a bit challenging for the Ultrastick, as she responds to pushes from the winds, but that became predictable and as my thumbs calmed with confidence, I wasn't bothered by them at all. In the calm air, wow, she flew amazing! I found the sweet spots for the Ultrastick for CG, engine, DR/expos, and prop. At first I thought she flies a bit heavy, as she is about 3 lbs over design weight, but realized that was more the wind and realizing I have to flyall of the control surfaces all the time. She needs that rudder and keen attention to elevator and aileron. She likes that 1 lb of lead up front. It made all the difference. I learned too that the Evo sounds better and seems to run smoother without a muffler extension on it, so that's gone now too. </p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Ax28SdZSSi4/YTe8KGePWUI/AAAAAAABE4E/0ynnmAfwnYgSn6H4jbCzxWnzgOPYXNjUACPcBGAsYHg/s4160/KIMG0867.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2340" data-original-width="4160" height="225" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Ax28SdZSSi4/YTe8KGePWUI/AAAAAAABE4E/0ynnmAfwnYgSn6H4jbCzxWnzgOPYXNjUACPcBGAsYHg/w400-h225/KIMG0867.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I got 4 10-15 min flights in with the Ultrastick, became very comfortable with her. Several touch and goes and landing to stop and turn around. Love how she responds to the flaps now that I have the elevator mix dialed in. It was a LOT of fun to fly in the end, and is back to being my go to! She is FAST and snappy. A couple of times a gust lifted the tail from behind killing the engine, but no ill effect, though the prop blades are not tracking perfectly. She developed a nice buzz from something, but couldn't find a source or problem.</div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gvkv8Hatmpo/YTe8KDRaT5I/AAAAAAABE4E/7BiZiTawT8YvPRfTl_y5BG5AN_cjIIM3gCPcBGAsYHg/s4160/KIMG0869.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2340" data-original-width="4160" height="225" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gvkv8Hatmpo/YTe8KDRaT5I/AAAAAAABE4E/7BiZiTawT8YvPRfTl_y5BG5AN_cjIIM3gCPcBGAsYHg/w400-h225/KIMG0869.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-a9ZYUA7KtnQ/YTe8KORmlLI/AAAAAAABE4E/EOZJooBy48I1k2RZa0eLSWtxnE3K7aOXwCPcBGAsYHg/s4160/KIMG0870.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2340" data-original-width="4160" height="225" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-a9ZYUA7KtnQ/YTe8KORmlLI/AAAAAAABE4E/EOZJooBy48I1k2RZa0eLSWtxnE3K7aOXwCPcBGAsYHg/w400-h225/KIMG0870.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">The 30cc Breitling went up a couple of times. I didn't take pics as it looks pretty much the same.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wkqXG10n6rE/YTLI-kcUW6I/AAAAAAABE1I/uwru0zle4iw60CySFkoMlSVHeAekDs1RgCPcBGAsYHg/s4160/KIMG0855.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2340" data-original-width="4160" height="225" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wkqXG10n6rE/YTLI-kcUW6I/AAAAAAABE1I/uwru0zle4iw60CySFkoMlSVHeAekDs1RgCPcBGAsYHg/w400-h225/KIMG0855.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-s_AZ2WxVGog/YTLI-vqjk8I/AAAAAAABE1I/S1wzR7ytFfQL2kC0Ti3z9YLr63S8GsiqACPcBGAsYHg/s4160/KIMG0856.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4160" data-original-width="2340" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-s_AZ2WxVGog/YTLI-vqjk8I/AAAAAAABE1I/S1wzR7ytFfQL2kC0Ti3z9YLr63S8GsiqACPcBGAsYHg/w225-h400/KIMG0856.JPG" width="225" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CG9C-3k1EZg/YTLI-gfgPiI/AAAAAAABE1I/WLgyI53zdR4i0EhrBNblyDiZ7ACZc5ijACPcBGAsYHg/s4160/KIMG0857.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2340" data-original-width="4160" height="225" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CG9C-3k1EZg/YTLI-gfgPiI/AAAAAAABE1I/WLgyI53zdR4i0EhrBNblyDiZ7ACZc5ijACPcBGAsYHg/w400-h225/KIMG0857.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">With the cote applied there is no sign of the repair!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><b><span style="color: #01ffff;">Wing Repair</span></b></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><b><span style="color: #01ffff;"><br /></span></b></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><b><span style="color: #01ffff;"><br /></span></b></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-weight: bold; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Spk51VUEPYw/YTLJdsw_1LI/AAAAAAABE1Y/HRztYMZ1NJMvMyTfzTZIYNoi1Ed41_KeACPcBGAsYHg/s4160/KIMG0837.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2340" data-original-width="4160" height="225" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Spk51VUEPYw/YTLJdsw_1LI/AAAAAAABE1Y/HRztYMZ1NJMvMyTfzTZIYNoi1Ed41_KeACPcBGAsYHg/w400-h225/KIMG0837.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-weight: bold; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">The outer break on the </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Eating edge of the right wing is the larger of the two, and also took out a stringer.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-weight: bold; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NN5GTlheRLc/YTLJdteAigI/AAAAAAABE1Y/rTIP_8Y-NRQjW0WdSheFelLpxKNW8yKPgCPcBGAsYHg/s4160/KIMG0838.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2340" data-original-width="4160" height="225" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NN5GTlheRLc/YTLJdteAigI/AAAAAAABE1Y/rTIP_8Y-NRQjW0WdSheFelLpxKNW8yKPgCPcBGAsYHg/w400-h225/KIMG0838.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-weight: bold; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">The smaller medial one.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-weight: bold; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-c5BjTLwaUSk/YTLJdvhOuyI/AAAAAAABE1Y/OVts7S49yrIKYrcmWZt5iVyJ3ppBWhZEACPcBGAsYHg/s4160/KIMG0839.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2340" data-original-width="4160" height="225" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-c5BjTLwaUSk/YTLJdvhOuyI/AAAAAAABE1Y/OVts7S49yrIKYrcmWZt5iVyJ3ppBWhZEACPcBGAsYHg/w400-h225/KIMG0839.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-weight: bold; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Pulled the bits into position a bit. I don't know how that changes anything either. Every time I fly that way I remind myself to watch out for the tree. I had just deployed my flaps and was watching how the plane responded with her adjusted CG, so I was focused on the plane and not watching the tree. So of course, I hit it. I struck the top and the plane turned, then rolled down to the ground. It was a quarter mile walk out, then another back, with a deep drainage ditch and marsh in between. It flies on 3S like its on rails, crisp repsonses, power. These ultralight foamies are aerobatic monsters! Things I would never do with a plane that has inertia I can do with this plane with confidence. I get 5 min on 2200 mAh. Its the one I put the Orange 6 ch 3Axis stabilized reciever on, and it works splendidly. I like flying it with and without stabilization on. The plane really doesn't need it, and when I am doing hardcore aerobatics I disable it remotely. I run 13x7x3 props on the RCGF-USA engine, but I'm thinking its too much prop for this Evo, which may be contributing to the challenges getting the needles right. I tried a 12x6 twin and this 13x6 twin, and it really liked them. I may stay with this one, but I just bought a 12x6x3, as I really like the extra thrust and okay, the static look. I thought hard about dropping all the way to 11x8x3, but decided to try the 12x6x3. I'll let you know how it goes. I did end before ai wanted to. Landed kinda hard for who knows what reason, and broke the sparky. Twisted the heavy duty landing gear just a bit. Already fixed both. The landing gear hard point looks OK.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Its time to program the <a href="https://www.horizonhobby.com/product/ar637t-dsmx-6-channel-as3x-and-safe-telemetry-receiver/SPMAR637T.html?gclid=CjwKCAjw4KyJBhAbEiwAaAQbE1P-T33V8RfNB01OXygeu54z82LDsKUCwjgVq4mqllEC0-0_5hjPuhoCGvIQAvD_BwE" target="_blank">Spektrum AR637T</a>'s AS3X Stabilization and enable it. This plane also doesn't really need it, but it has it, so... I am finding getting the elevator dual rates and expos right a bit challenging. Very responsive, I think a bit tail heavy still, so threw in another bag of nuts up front to add to the ones already packed in around the gas tank to move the CG forward. The already forward adjusted CG made a big difference today. Got the approach (50%) flaps elevator mix right, landing (full) flaps I am still working on finding its elevator mix. These will change a tad as the CG moves forward.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Rough weather coming this next week, from local stuff and then Ida, so not expecting to get much flying in. All the rain lately has likely made the weeds sprout up all over again even if it has been mowed. The replacement switch for the Pitts came in, so I decided to take the time to install it. I <a href="https://pretorian435.blogspot.com/2021/08/flag-pin-power-switch-fail-but-ultra.html?m=0" target="_blank">described earlier that my hopes for the Flag-Pin fail-on switch were crushed</a>.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ibHoTwawvyU/YSvOZwG-4MI/AAAAAAABEsQ/Gk0PNrufonAw1ziqgy5vQEt0hc8357MYACPcBGAsYHg/s4160/KIMG0662.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2340" data-original-width="4160" height="225" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ibHoTwawvyU/YSvOZwG-4MI/AAAAAAABEsQ/Gk0PNrufonAw1ziqgy5vQEt0hc8357MYACPcBGAsYHg/w400-h225/KIMG0662.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p style="text-align: center;">The flag-pin switch I replaced.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NJZ2IQZpuBU/YSvJQaQruYI/AAAAAAABEsA/Ab5auN_S6GklV7brqirNyXIYW-uVReKgACPcBGAsYHg/s4160/KIMG0808.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2340" data-original-width="4160" height="225" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NJZ2IQZpuBU/YSvJQaQruYI/AAAAAAABEsA/Ab5auN_S6GklV7brqirNyXIYW-uVReKgACPcBGAsYHg/w400-h225/KIMG0808.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">This is a great membrane <a href="https://hobbyking.com/en_us/turnigy-electrical-switch-with-battery-protection.html" target="_blank">power switch I purchased from Hobby King</a>. One, superstition, since the first two were lost for different reasons on their maiden, and second because I replaced the engine after rebuilding it and haven't gone back to test it. Would have sworn I had posted about the rebuild of the engine, but can't find one. I rebuilt the carb and replaced the cylinder head, so she'll need breaking in. She had a lot of tall grass to deal with from the heavy rains. Combined with high temps, she ran all the way down the runway and I had to turn around, run back up, and try again. Put the flaps down to half and she took off. Once she got airborne she shot up. She is as expected tail heavy, and she flew like it. It made approach a bit challenging. Got two flights in for about 25 min total. It fits EXACTLY if not a few atoms high under the wing. Had to use hot glue to secure the battery to save space under the wing. This also required I move the aileron and flap leads back so they didn't come out on top of the battery. Charged the battery and looking to head out again tomorrow. Time to get flying!</p><p>I made this unboxing video as I really didn't expect the fix to stick, but it did!</p><p><br /></p><div style="text-align: center;"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/aDBfsXqJieA" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe></div>Ken Schroeterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11792686126519801598noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2973001257469712096.post-34878051156067911452021-08-24T18:36:00.001-05:002021-08-24T18:51:40.725-05:00Flag-Pin Power Switch Fail but Ultra Stick 10cc Ready!<p>My Spektrum iX12 Transmitter is back, and its time to move forward towards getting back to flying! I bound the Ultra Stick and the Pitts to it and programmed them in. Ran the engine up and made a couple fine tunes. </p><p>At the end of my runs the power quit, and with diagnostic testing I isolated it to the "fail-on" power switch. It didn't fail on, and I can see why.</p><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_oQB1ae0J00/YSVyczL7BAI/AAAAAAABEmk/1Zz659Bnt9ouujDjilTXj_7S8xcBP-DEwCPcBGAsYHg/s4160/KIMG0792.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2340" data-original-width="4160" height="225" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_oQB1ae0J00/YSVyczL7BAI/AAAAAAABEmk/1Zz659Bnt9ouujDjilTXj_7S8xcBP-DEwCPcBGAsYHg/w400-h225/KIMG0792.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Here's the <a href="https://www.radicalrc.com/item/Remove-Flag-Before-Flight-Switch-Universal-Plugs-101111" target="_blank">RadicalRC flag-and-pin switch</a> with the pin OUT (power on). When the pin is pulled, the upper plate (the two wider horizontal tabs in the middle) held up off the lower contacts by the pin (the two smaller vertical tabs on each side of the lower plate) drops down closing the circuit by connecting the upper plate and two small tabs on the lower plate. The connection is in the middle aligned horizontally. Nice and simple! This should fail closed. When the pin is IN (power off) the main circuit is opened because the upper plate is lifted off the tabs opening the circuit, but allowing charging through the Futaba plug on the flag side through a third circuit through the pin. This failed because the upper plate stopped coming down far enough to close on the tabs. Essentially, the U shaped (on its side gap facing us) upper plate didn't spread wide enough anymore to contact the lower plate tabs. The design needs a spring to push it down and hold it down when the pin is out. This spring would go between the sides of the U of the upper plate "holding" the U spread. I wonder if the outside temps and humidity made the metal expand but causing the U to narrow enough lifting the tabs?</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UzxkS8HwVlA/YSVyc-7VxAI/AAAAAAABEmk/hYCOj093OVAt5g-QSLnk_Tyb3KnQNtxDgCPcBGAsYHg/s4160/KIMG0791.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2340" data-original-width="4160" height="225" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UzxkS8HwVlA/YSVyc-7VxAI/AAAAAAABEmk/hYCOj093OVAt5g-QSLnk_Tyb3KnQNtxDgCPcBGAsYHg/w400-h225/KIMG0791.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Here the pin is in (power off) lifting the upper plate. You can see those horizontal tabs are a smidge up, lifted off the immovable lower side vertical tabs. This is pretty clever for being so simple, and allowing charging through the Futaba connector on the flag pin(not seen)!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-37n6JZahTQ4/YSV3T0UwKeI/AAAAAAABEm8/q7SrQPunfBAqnucDTK2FVCsUClzbX_EowCPcBGAsYHg/s4160/KIMG0793.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2340" data-original-width="4160" height="225" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-37n6JZahTQ4/YSV3T0UwKeI/AAAAAAABEm8/q7SrQPunfBAqnucDTK2FVCsUClzbX_EowCPcBGAsYHg/w400-h225/KIMG0793.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span></div><span style="text-align: left;">The only switch I have on hand to replace it is a dual switch. Singles with a plate and charge lead but nomfuel spot are hard to find. Since I am now using only an electronic remote switch on the reciever for the ignition, I only need one power switch. Since the switch is the most likely failure point, I decided to make it a redundant switch. I soldered the leads in parallel, so if at least one is working the aircraft gets power, but both need to be turned off to cut power. This way if one switch fails the other continues to pass power. I use one 5000 mAh battery pack to power the ignition and the receiver through 6V power regulator.</span><div><br /></div><div>I plan to replace the flag and pin switch on the Pitts. I am not sure if the hot temps caused the metal of the switch to come off the tabs causing it to fail, but I can't have that happening and no longer trust this switch. I'll make my recommendations to RadicalRC because this switch is otherwise awesome and clever. Its still a great product but needs a fix.</div><div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OjGds0kVZqY/YSVyoz0FWsI/AAAAAAABEms/Wu9ZOKrwCMsQIKC7IdcLELUnYk_IAZXJQCPcBGAsYHg/s4160/KIMG0794.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2340" data-original-width="4160" height="225" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OjGds0kVZqY/YSVyoz0FWsI/AAAAAAABEms/Wu9ZOKrwCMsQIKC7IdcLELUnYk_IAZXJQCPcBGAsYHg/w400-h225/KIMG0794.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I made this a redundant switch by taking the two "IN" wires that came one from the ignition pack and the other from the reciver pack, and combining them in parallel into one "IN" lead, and the "OUT" wires into one "OUT" lead. The upper pic is the BEFORE though I had already cut the "IN" female Futaba leads off, you can still see the male "OUT" leads before they were combined. The lower pick is after joining the leads. It works great and makes the dual switch useful!</div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1nCjxiwvR5Q/YSVyo_Tx18I/AAAAAAABEms/5QzLq3lo_wEErnX7LgcOIllPUwDla2-PgCPcBGAsYHg/s4160/KIMG0795.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4160" data-original-width="2340" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1nCjxiwvR5Q/YSVyo_Tx18I/AAAAAAABEms/5QzLq3lo_wEErnX7LgcOIllPUwDla2-PgCPcBGAsYHg/w225-h400/KIMG0795.JPG" width="225" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">The "new" redundant switch in situ. I told them that was odd, I had not ordered it from them, and I wasn't expecting it until today and it was coming to my house, not the LHS. They insisted it was there, with my name on it, and that I had called a couple of days ago and ordered it. So I went there and showed them my Tower Hobbies receipt and FedEx notification just to be sure. They got all pissy, asking "Well, how did we get your name and number?" I replied I had no idea. I called two weeks ago for a stock check, since it was on backorder and wondering it they had one laying around. They did not, and I did not give any personal info other than my "Hi, I'm Ken, calling for a stock check." A week later on 8/1 Tower sent me the "In Stock!" email I had requested, and the next day I ordered it from Tower, on this past Monday 8/2. I don't know how that LHS stuff all happened, but it wasn't me. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">So they called me again a few hours later to let me know my model was at the shop...</div><p></p>Ken Schroeterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11792686126519801598noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2973001257469712096.post-26892426097618437682021-08-05T12:34:00.002-05:002021-08-05T20:20:58.203-05:00Nitroplanes Pitts Model 12 All Up!<p>Its all done. The cowl securing screws were designed to be tightened from inside the cowl, one at about 10 o'clock and one at 2.
